Baseball Twitter infuriated by Mike Trout getting plunked in his first at-bat for Team USA against the Giants
The San Francisco Giants took a break from spring training to face Team USA, captained by Mike Trout, in an exhibition before the World Baseball Classic. Things did not go according to plan, however, for Trout as he was plunked in his first at-bat by Giants pitcher Anthony DeSclafani.
This drew harsh comments from fans on Twitter who questioned the move considering Trout is an important figure for Team USA.
Anthony DeSclafani himself drew a lot of hatred from fans.
Fans also pointed out that Phil Nevin, the Los Angeles Angels manager, would have a lot to say if his star player was wounded a few days before the regular season.
Team USA will be looking to repeat as champions after winning the 2017 edition of the competition. This year, the team is stacked with stars from the MLB, including Mike Trout, Mookie Betts, Nolan Arenado and Paul Goldschmidt.
Mike Trout-captained-Team USA one of the favorites to win the World Baseball Classic
With a star-studded lineup like Team USA, they are sure to be one of the favorites at the WBC. They are currently placed in Pool C alongside Mexico, Colombia, Canada and Great Britain. USA is likely to qualify for the quarterfinals with ease where the competition will get tougher.
Team USA coach Mark DeRosa said the expectations on the team are high.
“When you look at this lineup on paper -- and you can put whoever you want in there -- I don’t know how you get through it,” DeRosa said.
Team USA does have home team advantage since all matches in Pool C will be played at Chase Field, Arizona, the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Their first match will be against Team Great Britain on March 11.
