Bo Bichette Injury Update: Blue Jays All-Star suffers fractured finger as nightmare season continues
It's been a season to forget for Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette. The saying "when it rains, it pours" has been evident when it comes to Bichette's 2024 campaign. After only one game since returning to the Blue Jays lineup, the struggling infielder has once again found himself placed on the 10-day IL with another injury.
On Thursday, the Toronto Blue Jays announced that Bo Bichette suffered a fractured middle finger on his right hand, drawing an end to his disappointing season. The infielder was originally scratched from the lineup on Wednesday after sustaining a finger contusion during the pregame warm up.
With the Blue Jays out of the postseason picture, the injury to Bichette will have little impact on the standings for the rest of the year. That said, Bichette was looking forward to getting back on the field with his teammates after missing two months of action with a calf injury. Unfortunately for him, that only lasted one game.
A two-time All-Star, Bichette's 2024 season is the worst of his career. After looking like a true superstar, things never clicked for Bichette this year, posting a career-worst .225 batting average and a .598 OPS with only four home runs.
Although there are several factors that contributed to the Blue Jays missing the postseason, Bichette's injuries and lack of production was one of them. With Bo Bichette sidelined, it will continue to present opportunites to the likes of Addison Barger and Ernie Clement, who will look to increase their values moving forward.
There is a chance that we have seen Bo Bichette's final game with the Blue Jays
Amid Bo Bichette's struggles, the talented infielder has been part of trade rumors all season long. Although Bichette has said that his desire is to remain with the Blue Jays and play alongside superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the foreseeable future, it remains to be seen if that is something that the organization will bank on.
Bichette has only one year remaining on his current contract and is slated to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2025 campaign. Even after a down season, Bichette's track record should net Toronto a valuable package on the trade market if they opt to move him. The LA Dodgers have been one of the teams consistently mentioned as a potential suitor.
