"Bobby Witt Jr. doesn't want any off day" - Salvador Perez explains why Royals 3B, helped by ex-WS champ dad, is the best player he's played with
Bobby Witt Jr. has emerged as one of the clubhouse leaders for the Kansas City Royals after record-breaking numbers this season. While just 24 years of age, the infielder has earned the respect of his teammates.
On the MLB Network's "MLB Central" show, special guest Salvador Perez was asked about his experience playing alongside Bobby Witt Jr. The catcher claimed Witt to be the best player he has played with. Considering his veteran status and 13 years of major league experience, his appreciation for the shortstop holds a lot of weight.
Perez also mentioned that he believes Witt's father, Bobby Witt Sr. has been a big influence on how he prepares himself. A starting pitcher, Witt Sr. played from 1986 to 2001 in the MLB for seven different teams.
"It is amazing. We are gonna keep saying that and I know a few teams are gonna get mad but he is the best player I have played with. The way he prepares himself and I tell you guys this, I think his dad helped him a lot. Played 16 years in the big league, that is amazing. He knows how to teach Junior even in the tough moment," Perez said.
The veteran catcher also praised him for his work ethic, noting his willingness to train every day without any rest.
"So it is how he gets prepared. He gets to the ballpark every day, he likes to play every day. He doesn't want any day off, only one DH whole season this year, so it is pretty cool," Perez added.
Bobby Witt Jr. and Royals take on Yankees as AL MVP debate amplifies
Both Bobby Witt Jr. and Aaron Judge have led their respective teams all year long. With the Yankees captain in a recent slump, Witt's case for the AL MVP has picked up steam. Their teams face off in a three-game series at Yankee Stadium.
A careful comparison between Witt and Judge's stats will show that the Royals shortstop would have an equal number of home runs with Judge if they switched home stadiums.
This makes the series even more interesting. Both teams will also look to further strengthen their playoff chances.
