Boston Red Sox fans depressed after team swept at Fenway Park by Pittsburgh Pirates: "Sox just stink" "Too cheap to want to compete"

The Boston Red Sox have sunk to the bottom of the American League East – possibly for good – after the team was swept at home by the traditionally-lowly Pittsburgh Pirates.

Pittsburgh completed the sweep by defeating the Red Sox 4-1 on Wednesday to drop Boston to just 2-4 after its six-game homestand at Fenway Park to open the season.

These are dark days for the Boston Red Sox, a team that was highly successful over the first two decades of this century. Boston popped up for a shock American League Championship Series appearance in 2021, but sunk to 78-84 in 2022 and finished last in the AL East for the second time in three seasons.

With the Baltimore Orioles' resurgence after several seasons of slumber, the Red Sox may once again wrap 2023 as the division's bottom feeder. Fans are not happy at the team's downfall since Chaim Bloom became the team's Chief Baseball Officer in 2020.

On the flip side, the Pirates improved to 4-2 on the season. Pittsburgh has grown accustomed to life in last place over the past 30 years, with only a three-year blip of playoff appearances from 2013-2015 highlighting a three-decade stretch of drudgery since the last mighty Pirates teams of the early 1990s.

Taking three at the Boston Red Sox was Pittsburgh's first three-game sweep at an American League ballpark since 2018, and Pirates fans raised the Jolly Roger.

Back in Boston, the winter of Red Sox fans' discontent promises to carry on indefinitely.
