Braves legend Chipper Jones blames Yankees bias for Andruw Jones' Hall of Fame snub
Atlanta Braves legend Chipper Jones can't believe Andruw Jones getting rejected for Hall of Fame over the years. Jones once again came up shy in Hall of Fame voting, receiving a 61.6 percent vote share. A player needs to get a 75% vote share to get elected into the Hall of Fame.
Last year, the percentage of vote share was the same for Andruw, who's hailed by many as the best defensive centerfielder MLB has seen.
Chipper has reignited the debate about the Hall of Fame voting process, claiming that Yankees bias might be at play in Andruw's continued exclusion from Cooperstown.
In a fiery tweet on X, Chipper questioned the fairness of the process:
"I wanna ask all HOF voters one question….if Andruw Jones plays for the New York Yankees for 15 yrs with 10 GGs, 400Hrs, 1300 RBIs…is he a HOFer? Lemme answer for you….first ballot! Time to have a conversation about HOFers chiming in. 75 living members can make sure it’s right!"
What Chipper Jones insinuated with his tweet in support for Andruw Jones?
Chipper Jones argued that if Andruw Jones had played for the New York Yankees for 15 years and accomplished what he did — 10 Gold Gloves, over 400 home runs, and 1,300 RBIs — he would have been a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
Chipper insinuated that playing for a team with more media attention and rich historical prestige, like the Yankees, might have made the difference in how Andruw’s career was perceived.
This tweet also called for more involvement from current Hall of Fame members in the voting process, suggesting that the 75 living Hall of Famers should have a greater role in ensuring deserving players, like Andruw, receive their due recognition.
It isn't the first time Chipper has rallied behind Andruw's Hall of Fame case. He had previously asked the Braves contingent, including the likes of Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux and John Smoltz, to get their brother where he belongs.
"You can argue about the fringe parts all you want, but the Braves and I think I have three Hall of Fame pitchers to back me up on this," Chipper said last year.
"The Braves are not the Braves of the '90s and early 2000s without the daily contributions of Andruw Jones. He is the best defensive centerfielder I have ever seen."
