“Classless and disrespectful”; “Pissed off an entire fan base” - Mets fans fume over Fox Sports MLB’s post of Shohei Ohtani knocking out Grimace
The New York Mets suffered a disappointing loss against the LA Dodgers on Sunday, ending the team's World Series hopes. While the team was dealing with the loss, Fox Sports MLB posted a picture on social media of Shohei Ohtani standing in a ring wearing boxing gloves with the Mets' mascot, Grimace, lying on the floor.
Fans were upset to see the graphic, which was reposted by actor and comedian John Saponaro. They called out Fox Sports for trolling the team.
Here's a look at some of the fan reactions on X.
"I’m viscerally angry bc at the end of the day they’re not some shitpost online personality. They’re supposed to be the pinnacle of sports news and they’re treating the people who lost like this? It’s so classless and disrespectful. What did we ever do to deserve this," wrote one fan.
"This is so low class. Win gracefully, pissed off an entire fan base, who won’t watch their WS," added another fan.
"Fox was brutal all series. They clearly had an agenda. Their play-by-play guy is the Dodgers announcer. let's be real here," another fan wrote.
Comments continued to flow as fans lashed out at Fox Sports for their post.
"They're trash. There are more players in the league than just Ohtani, but you would never know how they act," one fan responded.
"Absolutely classless and biased networks," one fan chipped in.
"And it’s only ever the Mets. Look at how they covered the Yankees and Guardians. Idk if it’s just Mets for Clicks or what, but I’ve never seen the national media disrespect a team to the degree they disrespect the Mets," one fan chimed in.
Mets' Sean Manaea proud of team despite loss
Mets pitcher Sean Manaea stated that he was proud of his team in an interview with SNY after Game 6.
"I'm just super proud of everything we accomplished. Nobody else I'd do it with, these boys grinded the whole year. It's sports so it is what it is," Manaea said.
New York scored five runs but lost 10-5 to concede the championship series to the Dodgers. The Mets were the last team to be eliminated from the playoffs as the Dodgers advanced to the World Series, where they will face the Yankees.
