Cleveland Guardians fans rejoice as team zeroes in on long-term deal for 24-year-old Andres Gimenez: “THERE'S THE MONEYBAGS”
At 24 years of age, second baseman Andres Gimenez epitomizes the youthful core of his team, the Cleveland Guardians. It now appears that his team also knows that.
With an average age of just over 26, the Guardians were the youngest team in baseball. That did not stop manager Terry Francona's club from capturing the AL Central title and Andres Gimenez from having a spectacular sophomore year with the club.
Andres Gimenez, a 24-year-old native of Barquisimeto, Venezuela, hit .297/.371/.466 with 17 home runs and 69 RBIs last season. After an incredible campaign, Gimenez was awarded an All-Star designation and a Silver Slugger Award. He also finished in the top six in AL MVP Award voting.
In a recent Twitter post, ESPN analyst Jeff Passan announced that the Cleveland Guardians were zeroing in on a multi-year deal with Gimenez. Fans are loving the news.
"Second baseman Andrés Giménez and the Cleveland Guardians are finalizing a long-term contract extension, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN. Giménez, 24, was a first-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner last year and put up 7.4 Wins Above Replacement -- a star-level season." - Jeff Passan
Gimenez came to Cleveland from the New York Mets in a blockbuster 2021 deal that sent star shortstop Francisco Lindor and pitcher Carlos Carrasco the other way. After more than two years, both teams are widely considered to have done well with the trade.
The Cleveland Guardians surprised many in 2022, beating out the opposition to cruise to their first divisional title since 2018. Although the team lost to the New York Yankees in the ALDS, fans think 2023 could bring even better results for the team.
It is not currently known how much the Guardians will be signing Gimenez for. After exceeding rookie limits following the 2020 season, Gimenez was only getting one-year deals worth less than $1 million from the Guardians. This has led some to dub the second baseman a "one-year wonder." Although that is all about to change.
With a big deal on the table, Andres Gimenez has a chance to build a home in Cleveland
Alongside other talents like Josh Naylor, Steven Kwan, and Jose Ramirez, the Guardians are already looking threatening. The terms of Gimenez's deal remain to be seen, as does whether or not the young star can keep the momentum going as he enters his fourth season in the MLB.
