Corbin Burnes Hot Stove Rumors: MLB analyst doubts former Cy Young winner could opt for short-term deal with high AAV despite chatter
Corbin Burnes remains arguably the most sought-after starting pitcher in free agency. The former Cy Young Award winner is coming off a strong season and is seeking to receive a sizable payday because of his exploits on the mound. The 30-year-old remains one of the best pitchers and is expected to be paid as such this offseason.
Although there has been much speculation about where and for how much Burnes will sign for. Some have predicted Burnes will sign a short-term deal with a higher salary per year, while others have said the opposite.
While the terms and salary have varied depending on who is asked about predicting Burnes' future, MLB analyst Roch Kubatko does not believe that the former Baltimore Orioles ace could opt for a shorter-term deal even though it has been chatter that he could.
"I’ve heard the speculation that Corbin Burnes could sign for less years at a higher annual average value, perhaps going as low as three years. I’ll believe that when I see it. Not a minute beforehand," Kubatko wrote via MASN Sports.
Although Kubatko acknowledged that there could be a solid strategy behind signing a high-priced, short-term contract right now and hitting the open market again at only 33 years old, he is seemingly not convinced.
Over 194.1 innings with the Baltimore Orioles, Corbin Burnes posted a 15-9 record with a 2.92 ERA and 181 strikeouts. The superstar is looking for a deal upwards of $245 million, according to MLB insider Mark Feinsand.
Corbin Burnes' potential landing spots are believed to have been narrowed down to four teams
Corbin Burnes has been linked to a number of different clubs, however, according to MLB insider Jim Bowden, that list is narrowing down.
Bowden believes the San Francisco Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, and Baltimore Orioles are considered the top four teams who are the most serious contenders to land him. Burnes' addition would be a significant boost to any of the four clubs mentioned above as they look to push for the World Series.
