“Corbin Burnes is one of the most competitive guys” - Willy Adames on how former Cy Young winner could elevate Giants’ pitching staff
The San Francisco Giants made a big splash in signing free agent Willy Adames this offseason, and he might provide more than play on the field. Adames is wasting no time in trying to help the Giants lure free-agent pitcher Corbin Burnes. Adames has seen Burnes' greatness firsthand, as the two were teammates with the Milwaukee Brewers.
The Giants still need some help in the rotation, and Burnes is one of the top free agents available. San Francisco will look to set up a meeting with Burnes and his agent, but Adames isn't waiting around to see what happens.
In an interview with KNBR 680's "Murph & Markus" on Monday, he said he was already on the phone with Burnes after his introductory press conference.
"I hope we can make that happen because that would be an incredible addition to the team," Adames said. "When you have a guy like Corbin on your team, that's like a 99 percent [chance] you're winning that day.
"That's a guy I love to play with and play defense for, and he's one of the most competitive guys I've ever played with, and obviously if we could add him to the team it would be an insane move, but we're hoping and doing our part in every department so hopefully we can make it happen."
With San Francisco playing in a tough NL West Division, they need all the wins they can get.
The radio hosts were pushing Adames to give some more information about his conversation with Burnes, but he didn't give up much information.
Adames signed the richest contract in the history of the Giants and will start in the field. Burnes, a former Cy Young Award winner, pitched for the Baltimore Orioles last season.
Giants are frontrunners to land Corbin Burnes
On Monday, MLB insider Jon Morosi shared news about Corbin Burnes.
"The Giants are viewed by many as one of the frontrunners, perhaps the frontrunner, to sign Corbin Burnes," Morosi said on MLB Network.
Burnes won the National League Cy Young Award in 2021, kicking off three consecutive All-Star seasons. Over that stretch, he compiled an impressive 33-21 record.
Burnes could return to the National League, and Willy Adames hopes it is with the San Francisco Giants.
