Daz Cameron Trade Update: Orioles reportedly acquire talented outfielder from Athletics
The Baltimore Orioles faded down the stretch and limped into the playoffs before being swept at home. Their preparations for next season start with a trade for Daz Cameron. The Orioles are sending cash considerations for the outfielder, so the Athletics aren't getting anything out of the deep Baltimore farm system.
While far from a blockbuster, the offseason is technically just one full day old. Yet the Orioles are already making moves.
They won 101 games in 2023 but were unable to perform in the playoffs and lost the ALDS in sweep fashion. They made some aggressive moves in the offseason but won even fewer games and were swept out of the Wild Card round.
Still, the front office isn't resting on its laurels. The Oakland Athletics outfielder has shown flashes at times, though he had a disappointing .587 OPS in 170 plate appearances during the year. He was up and down from the minor leagues in 2024.
How Daz Cameron landed with the Orioles again
Daz Cameron has been with the Baltimore Orioles before. He has traveled a long way to this point, as do many hopefuls. The Houston Astros selected him in the early first round of the 2015 draft.
Eventually, he would be a key part of the Justin Verlander trade in 2017. He landed with the Detroit Tigers and would make his debut three seasons later. He struggled and was designated for assignment after the 2022 season.
The Orioles picked him up off of waivers then. He was removed from the 40-man roster but invited to Spring Training. He didn't make the team and couldn't crack the 40-man again before landing with the Oakland Athletics.
He played well at Triple-A but struggled to make the jump back to the big leagues. Now, the Orioles are taking a flyer again on a player they once had, hoping he can make the adjustments to be a big-league contributor.
