"Elly De La Cruz is the most exciting player in baseball" - MLB analyst opens up on the Reds’ sensational
Cincinnati Reds infielder Elly De La Cruz is known for his electrifying baserunning on the field. This season, the Reds All-Star has stolen 57 bases and is on pace to eclipse the 70 stolen bases mark, something not achieved in the majors since 2009.
According to MLB analyst Steve Phillips, De La Cruz is the most exciting player in baseball. The former MLB executive shared his thoughts on MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM.
"It is something about Elly and his physical presence; your eyes just get drawn to him. He’s so cool to look at—long, loose, lanky, with the hair and the stripe running down his back. Oh yeah, he is the most exciting player in baseball today,” Phillips said.
Elly De La Cuz has already made history by becoming the sixth-youngest player in the Reds' history to have four extra-base hits in a single game.
"Ohtani may be the best player or the most unique player because he pitches and hits and everything. Yes, Cruz is not as good as Ohtani as a hitter, but Elly is the most exciting to watch,” Phillips added.
Elly De La Cruz joins elite Reds ranks with historic four-extra-base-hit night
On Monday, Elly De La Cruz played a pivotal role in the Red's impressive 10-3 win against the Miami Marlins. He hit two home runs and two doubles. Since 1901, this was the 20th game with four extra-base hits by a Reds player.
He also achieved the milestone of hitting 20 home runs and stealing 50 bases in a season, a feat previously accomplished only by Joe Morgan and Eric Davis among Reds players.
Starting pitcher Nick Martinez was in awe of De La Cruz’s power. Manager David Bell praised De La Cruz for his hard work and resilience and said there’s more to come.
