Everything at stake for White Sox with 7 games left in already historically bad 2024 season

The Chicago White Sox are having one of the worst seasons of all time. As it stands, they are 36-119, which is by far the worst record of the season. Their .232 winning percentage is 136 points worse than the next-closest team.

The Sox lost last night to the San Diego Padres, dropping them to 83 games under .500. This is tied for the most games below .500 in a single season that any team has ever had. They've been historically bad, and there are seven games left.

In those seven games, the White Sox will try to avoid more bad history. Unfortunately, it's all but assured that they will make more history, though. If they go 7-0 in their final week of games, they will finish with 119 losses. That would be one shy of the record that the New York Mets set in 1962.

If they go 6-1, they would tie but not break this record. The team has not had a 6-1 stretch all year. If they go 5-2, they will exceed the Mets' win percentage and avoid that part of the record.

To get to 40 wins, which is still historically low, they need to win four of the final seven. This is a stretch they've gone on before. Should they go 3-4, the White Sox would avoid the worst win percentage in the modern era. There's a lot at stake for MLB's worst team.

Exploring the White Sox's remaining schedule

For the most part, every team will be heavy favorites against the Chicago White Sox over these next seven games. No matter how bad a team is, they are better than Chicago in 2024.

They have one more game against the Padres, who have 89 wins. If they're to add some wins, it will likely be in the following series: a three-game set with the Los Angeles Angels (62-93).

They wrap the regular season with three games against the playoff-hopeful Detroit Tigers, who will likely need all three wins to get into the playoffs.
