Ex-MLB star Jason Kipnis fulfills promise to mom, pens heartfelt message after major milestone
Former big leaguer Jason Kipnis fulfilled a promise made long ago. Kipnis, a two-time All-Star, earned his high school and college degrees.
The achievements were posted on MLB’s X account, where a smiling Jason Kipnis rocks a graduation cap and gown. Here’s a look at the happy grad:
Kipnis failed to complete school as he focused on playing baseball during his younger days. He was a fourth-round pick in the 2008 Draft by the San Diego Padres. He would re-enter the draft the next season, becoming the then-Cleveland Indians’ second-round pick.
Kipnis eventually reached the Majors with the Cleveland Guardians. He spent his last big-league season with the Chicago Cubs, appearing in 44 games before calling quits in 2023.
Kipnis proudly received his degree from Arizona State University, appearing at the commencement ceremony, flashing a bright smile and a proud look in his eyes.
Here’s a sneak peek at the ceremony:
The IG post has received over 13k likes. Given Kipnis’ popularity, the post will only continue to draw more attention to the former slugger.
Jason Kipnis returns to where it all started
Jason Kipnis attended Glenbrook North High School in the Chicago area. From there, he attended Arizona State, eventually getting drafted and going on to play in the Majors.
Following his retirement, Kipnis returned to where it all started. The Glenbrook Torch, the school’s official newspaper, chronicled Kipnis’ return. Kipnis was quoted by The Torch, as saying the following about his retirement:
“Maybe it was my decision to retire, but at the same time, it really wasn’t (as) if no teams were calling,” Kipnis added, “And I’m at peace with that. I did everything I could to stay ready, but it just wasn’t in the cards.”
As Kipnis transitioned into life after pro ball, he and Glenbrook coach Justin Weiner, who have been long-time friends, talked about the possibility of coaching together one day.
That plan came true in May this year. Kipnis joined the coaching staff at this former high school, imparting the wisdom he had accumulated after playing over 1,100 Major League games.
However, just because most view Kipnis as a celebrity, it doesn’t mean Kipnis feels like one. According to The Torch, Kipnis tries to be himself when coaching. He’s there to support players and help the team win.
While returning to his former high school may be a matter of coming full circle for Jason Kipnis, it could be the beginning of a coaching career. Like many other coaches and managers, their coaching careers must begin somewhere.
For Kipnis, what better place to begin his coaching career than where his playing career began? The 37-year-old still has a lot ahead of him.
