Exclusive: Tampa Bay Rays insider JP Peterson bemoans Tyler Glasnow's constant injury issues but still believes in team's pitching staff

The Tampa Bay Rays have assembled a tremendous group of pitchers for the 2023 season, but an early injury to Tyler Glasnow could derail them. That is one fear held by insider JP Peterson, but he is confident in the rest of the assembled pitchers. Glasnow has been injury prone practically his entire professional career and 2023 is proving to be no exception.

When healthy, Glasnow is an All-Star-caliber pitcher. He just simply isn't healthy often enough. In 2021, the last season he played a significant amount of time, he pitched for an ERA of 2.66. That would be among the best in baseball if he could do it over the course of an entire season.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported on Glasnow's oblique injury, which will keep him out at the start of the season.

Tyler Glasnow, one of #Rays top starters, sustained an oblique injury during a live BP session Monday at Disney. MRI on Tuesday to determine severity, but he seems certain to miss some time. Threw about 6 pitches and walked off mound with athletic trainer.

JP Peterson, an insider and analyst of the Tampa Bay Rays, sat down for an exclusive interview with Sprtskeeda and shared his thoughts on Glasnow:

"Tyler Glasnow. Key word being glass now. Hurt again, probably going to miss the first two months of the season. They’ve got a great pitching staff now, even without Glasnow who I think can be a top-five pitcher in the league when he’s healthy."

He continued:

"They’ve added Zach Elfein from the Phillies who was pitching in front of the worst defense in the league last year and now has the best defense. He’ll be effective. They’ve still got a great bullpen, great arms."

Pitching has never been more important in MLB, and the Tampa Bay Rays are set to be capable of overcoming Glasnow's injury.

Glasnow is one of the very few pitchers who could be Cy Young finalists if he is able to stay healthy. At this point in his career, that is a very big if.

Despite a small payroll relative to their division rivals, the Tampa Bay Rays are aiming for a playoff spot. Surpassing the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays will be a tall task without the talents of Tyler Glasnow.
