“Failure, embarrassing, unacceptable” - White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf pens letter to fans, takes responsibility for franchise’s worst season
The Chicago White Sox ended their 2024 season on Sunday with a 9-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers. The franchise set a record by becoming the worst team in MLB's modern era, recording 121 losses in a season, a feat previously held by the 1962 New York Mets with 120 losses.
The White Sox won only 41 games this year, posting the lowest winning percentage of .253. Addressing their disappointing season, owner Jerry Reinsdorf released a statement to fans.
“By all measures, our on-field performance this season was a failure. As the leader of this organization, that is my ultimate responsibility. There are no excuses,” Reinsdorf wrote.
Jerry Reinsdorf described the Chicago White Sox’s 2024 season as a ‘failure’ and ‘embarrassing.’ Justifying the backlash from fans, he called the team's performance ‘completely unacceptable.’
“I want to thank you for continuing to support the team throughout what was an embarrassing season. You all deserved better. This season’s performance was completely unacceptable and the varying reactions and emotions from our fanbase are completely understandable.”
Reinsdorf has owned the Chicago White Sox since 1981, with the team winning the World Series under his ownership once, in 2005.
“Every loss this season — every blown save, every defensive miscue, every shutout, every sweep — hurt. It was a long, painful season for us all. We recognize, on a daily basis, that it is our responsibility to earn your trust, attention, time and support.,” Reinsdorf added.
The White Sox have had several ups and downs this season, including the firing of manager Pedro Grifol. On Aug. 8, former baseball outfielder Grady Sizemore took over as interim manager in Grifol’s absence and led the team to a 13-32 record, which translates to a full-season pace of 47-115.
White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf opens up about "important decision" team will make in upcoming months
The Chicago White Sox are set to start their search for a new manager. Discussing the same, Reinsdorf wrote:
“Our organization’s most important decision in the coming months is to evaluate and identify a new manager and leadership voice for this organization. Chris is well underway with this search.”
“He has identified the key attributes and preferences for our next manager and has already begun an exhaustive search with a wide range of candidates to lead the White Sox in the clubhouse and dugout.”
White Sox general manager Chris Getz said last week in an interview with MLB.com that they are considering interim manager Grady Sizemore for a permanent position.
It will be interesting to see what steps the White Sox front office takes to bounce back in the upcoming 2025 season.
