Former Mets' starter Luis Severino signs record-breaking three-year deal with Athletics: Report

The Athletics are getting active early into the offseason after making a deal with Luis Severino. The club will boost their pitching staff as Severino is coming off a bounce-back year with the New York Mets.

According to MLB insider Jeff Passan, the two sides agreed to a three-year, $67 million contract. This is now the largest guarantee the A's have ever offered another player.

As mentioned earlier, Severino is coming off a bounce-back year this past season. He struggled with the New York Yankees in 2023 but finished with an 11-7 record in 2024 with the Mets.

Outside of his record, Severino held a 3.91 ERA with 161 strikeouts across 182 innings of work. He should slide in nicely as a frontline starter for a team that has some exciting young players looking to prove themselves.

After signing Luis Severino to a record-breaking deal, the Athletics could have a solid rotation heading into next season. Severino would likely lead the group with JP Sears, Joey Estes, Mitch Spence, and J.T. Ginn behind him.

Outside of Severino, Sears is another pitcher with a good amount of big-league experience. He has started 32 games the last two seasons and has consistently been knocking his ERA down the last three seasons.

Estes experienced his first full season in the MLB and while the youngster struggled at times, he flashed dominance. He will look to ride the momentum of his 92-strikeout season in 2024.

This is a great opportunity for Severino to be the leader of a rotation and somebody these younger pitchers look up to. Much will be expected from him in 2025, especially with the amount of money the club committed to him.
