Gerrit Cole's wife Amy captures son Caden cheering for dad in full Yankees pinestripes during ALDS Game 1
Reigning Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole started Game 1 for the New York Yankees in the ALDS series opener against the Kansas City Royals on Saturday in Bronx. Cheering him from the stands were his wife Amy and son Caden.
While the Yankees ace was not in his usual dominant version, he did well in a tight ball game. Cole pitched five hits, allowing seven hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks and struck out four batters. When the pitcher exited the ball game in the sixth inning, the Yankees were leading 4-3 before eventually winning 6-5.
Caden was in Yankees white pinstripes, wearing Cole's No. 45 jersey. Amy captured her son from behind as the duo enjoyed the game at Yankee Stadium.
Gerrit Cole assesses his Game 1 start: "Made my fair share of mistakes"
Gerrit Cole had seen better days than what unraveled in ALDS Game 1 against the Kansas City Royals on Saturday. It was a grind for him on the mound, surrendering 11 hard-hit balls, which was his career high in a start in Statcast Era.
“I made my fair share of mistakes, that's for sure. Need to be sharper,” Cole said. “I’m just going to try to look at the film and learn from the mistakes.”
“It was a grind,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said of Cole’s performance.
With a rest day to follow, Aaron Boone's decision to pull out Gerrit Cole much earlier turned out just fine as he utilized his bullpen to get the win.
“Obviously the bullpen coming in and holding the line and [Luke Weaver] finishing it off, it was a good way to start,” Boone said.
Before Gerrit Cole took the mound on Saturday's game, he was treated with a warm reception by Yankees fans.
“Wow, incredible atmosphere,” Cole said. “I don't think I've ever had a roll call all the way out from the dugout. So that was really special.”
Cole is expected to once again take the mound in Game 4 at Kauffman Stadium. However, for that to happen, the Royals need to win at least one of the next two games to stretch the best-of-five series to Game 4.
