Gerrit Cole upset with Yankees' continued slump as Subway Series loss adds to poor form - "This is a tough loss... not happy about it"
New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole admitted that the heavy loss to the New York Mets on Wednesday has compounded the recent poor form of the team. Although Cole is dejected by the current plight of the Yankees, he feels that the team cannot do anything more to improve the situation other than to focus on being fully prepared for the next game.
Gerrit Cole is the reigning Cy Young Award winner in the American League, but he was making just his seventh start of the year after missing the opening months due to an elbow injury. The right-hander had another rough outing after lasting just 5.2 innings while giving up six earned runs from two walks and eight hits, with three of those going over the fence.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Cole appeared visibly upset by the 12-3 hammering against their crosstown rivals in the Subway Series, as well as the role he played in the defeat:
"This is a tough loss for us tonight. We're definitely sitting in it right now, not happy about it. When it's all said and done, we've got to flush it and get ready for tomorrow, because tomorrow is really important. Actually, we have an off day tomorrow. So the next game is really important. We need to be in as good a spot as we can to be able to perform for that," Cole said.
"I'm frustrated. I'm frustrated sitting in the emotions of this loss. But our job is to flush it and not let the play of the last six weeks affect the way we prepare for the next game," he added.
The Mets hold a 4-0 record against the Yankees in 2024 and have thereby swept their city rivals this season.
Yankees have been on a slump despite Gerrit Cole returning from injury
The Bronx Bombers held the best record in the league a month and a half ago, even though the team was coping without Gerrit Cole leading the starting rotation. However, they have been on a massive slump of late.
At present, the Yankees have a miserable 10-21 record since June 15, leaving them 60-44 for the season so far, dropping them to second place in the American League East standings behind the Baltimore Orioles.
On the other hand, Cole made his first appearance of the season on June 19, though he has yet to perform at a high level since returning from injury. Following his latest start on Wednesday, he has a 3-2 record with a 35.0 IP and a 5.40 ERA while allowing nine home runs.
The Yankees travel to Fenway Park next for a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox beginning on Friday.
