“He took offense to it” - Cal Quantrill responds to heated exchange with Resse McGuire over past arrest amid bench-clearing incident

Colorado Rockies pitcher Cal Quantrill discussed his heated exchange with Boston Red Sox's Reese McGuire which led to a bench-clearing incident during their game on Wednesday.

The intensity of the game skyrocketed during the top of the fourth inning after McGuire flied out to center to end that inning with a runner on third. Quantrill then pumped his first, and the two jawed at one another. Quantrill reportedly jibed at McGuire about his arrest in 2020. Shortly after that, both teams cleared their benches to separate the two players.

"You j***ed off in a fucking parking lot you dumb f**k,” Quantrill apparently yelled at McGuire.

In the postgame interview, Cal Quantrill said that he didn't direct his screams toward McGuire.

"Listen, I recognize we were up by what we were up by (seven, at 8-1 in the 20-7 victory), but I celebrate important outs," Quantrill said. "He took offense to it. Words were exchanged. We move on.”

Quantrill and Colorado eventually the 2-1 series victory over the Red Sox.

The Rockies are set to face the San Francisco Giants next for a three-game series starting Friday at Oracle Park while the Red Sox will host the New York Yankees for their three-game series starting on the same day at Fenway Park.

Rockies catcher opens up on Wednesday's bench-clearing incident

Colorado Rockies catcher Jacob Stallings talked about the incident after the game. After the spat broke between Cal Quantrill and Reese McGuire, Stallings intervened to separate the players, calm things down and keep the situation from getting out of hand.

“I saw it all unfold because I was pumped,” Stallings said. “I was like, ‘Let’s go, Cal,’ and Cal was looking right at me. We wanted to leave that run (at third). I saw Reese, and I know Reese from our Pirates days. I knew Cal wasn’t yelling at Reese initially. I just wanted to calm things down before anything got too crazy.”

However, the benches were cleared anyway, followed by a lot of conversations between both sides. The Rockies pitcher yelled at McGuire and his other teammates, including 2024 All-Star MVP Jarren Duran.
