How Jackson Holliday could influence the Orioles' playoff roster dynamics

Barring some last-minute fall from grace, Jackson Holliday and the Baltimore Orioles appear primed for a postseason run. As of Friday, the Orioles have a commanding five-game lead in the American League Wild Card standings.

Although Baltimore is 3-7 in its last ten games, the team has several talented players and should turn things around. Despite proven stars such as Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman being lineup staples, someone like Jackson Holliday may give the O's a boost heading into the postseason.

Given his team's blend of new and established performers, it may be difficult for Orioles manager Brandon Hyde to make lineup choices during the stretch run. If the Orioles clinch a Wild Card spot, they will play a best-of-3 series. The club doesn't have time to learn if Holliday slots best at the bottom of the order.

In recent games, Holliday has started at second base. However, the Orioles boast several versatile players who can replace the rookie if he struggles. Livan Soto is the other half of the Orioles' second base platoon. Hyde could turn to him, depending on the matchup.

The Orioles have two other infielders nearing returns from the IL, which could factor into Holliday's role. Both Jordan Westburg and Ramon Urias have begun rehab assignments, and if they are healthy for the playoffs, Holliday might be benched.

Jackson Holliday has struggled to make much of an impact during his rookie season

Holliday's debut MLB season has been a mixed bag. After struggling to open the year, the 2022 No. 1 pick was demoted to the minor leagues. This move helped once he returned to the main roster. However, he quickly cooled again.

Through 54 games this season, Jackson Holliday has posted a paltry .175 batting average with five home runs and 23 RBIs. These numbers make him a liability to the Orioles' playoff lineup. Expect to see the rookie benched if Westburg and Urias return to action before the playoffs.
