"I got bombed that night" - When Alex Rodriguez shared his emotional reaction to vetoed Red Sox trade
Alex Rodriguez might be the most polarizing player in MLB history. During his prime, he was one of the best players to ever don an MLB uniform, but his admitted steroid usage has tainted his legacy.
Even though he may never reach the Hall of Fame, Alex Rodriguez remains a popular figure in the baseball community. Now a commentator and entrepreneur, A-Rod has remained relevant even though his final game came in 2016.
"I might get hate for this, but idc. Alex Rodriguez deserves to be in the hall of fame. He’s one of the best third baseman’s ever. If other steroid users get in, no reason why Arod shouldn’t be in the hall of fame." - @yanksfan4lifee
When fans look back on the career of Rodriguez, they will likely associate him with time spent with the New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners or Texas Rangers.
That could have changed if not for a vetoed trade that would have sent the superstar infielder to the Boston Red Sox. After the move was vetoed, A-Rod said the news hit him hard.
"I got bombed that night," Rodriguez shared on an episode of the Baseball Tonight Podcast with Buster Olney.
The three-time MVP explained that he has never been much of a drinker, but he and a group of friends went out on the town.
"I threw up on the streets of New York from like disappointment," he continued, sharing how the non-trade hurt him.
"On This Date: 15 years ago, the Rangers traded Alex Rodriguez to the Yankees ... But he was originally going to be sent to Boston. The 30 for 30 Short "The Deal" tells that story" - @30for30
A closer look at the vetoed trade that would have sent Alex Rodriguez to the Boston Red Sox
One of the biggest "What If" trades in MLB history, the Texas Rangers had agreed to a three-team deal that would have sent Alex Rodriguez to the Boston Red Sox. The deal would have paired Rodriguez with one of the most prolific home run hitters in the game, David Ortiz.
In exchange for A-Rod, the Texas Rangers were slated to receive a pair of future All-Stars, Manny Ramirez and Jon Lester. The third team involved in the trade would have been the Chicago White Sox, who would have received star shortstop Nomar Garciaparra.
The deal, though, would not come to fruition. The trade was vetoed, and, eventually, Rodriguez was traded to the New York Yankees. The rest, as they say, is history.
