"I grew up as a Derek Jeter fan": MLB's SBs leader Elly De La Cruz shares wholesome moment with Yankees great during All-Star interview

Cincinnati Reds infielder Elly De La Cruz had a heartfelt reaction while sharing the podium with Yankees legend Derek Jeter, who was with his FOX Sports crew to cover the All-Star festivities at Globe Life Field. De La Cruz, who leads the majors with 48 stolen bases, is named in the National League reserves for the Midsummer Classic.

De La Cruz was interviewed by FOX Sports analysts, including Jeter, Red Sox legend David "Big Papi" Ortiz, Alex Rodriguez and Kevin Burkhardt. During the interview, De La Cruz mentioned that he grew up as a Jeter fan, which culminated in a thankful response and a handshake from the five-time World Series champion.

"I grew up as a [Derek] Jeter fan. He was my favorite player growing up," De La Cruz said.
"Thank you, I appreciate that," Jeter replied.
"It's a pleasure to meet you," the Reds infielder added while completing a handshake.

Elly De La Cruz answers about learning English after a query from Derek Jeter

There aren't many ballplayers who make an effort to learn English while playing in the majors. Elly De La Cruz certainly doesn't belong in that category as the Dominican native mentioned earlier in the season that he is taking classes to learn English.

This was highlighted when Derek Jeter asked him why he was learning a foreign language during the interview.

"I would like everybody here in the USA to understand what I say, and to send the message to all the kids in the Dominican that they can do it too," De La Cruz responded.

This left all five FOX Sports analysts appreciating the infielder's effort to connect with his fanbase while serving as an inspiration for those who look up to him in his native country.

On the baseball front, Elly De La Cruz is on a career year, already stealing 48 bases while also slashing .256/.346/.483 with 17 home runs, 43 RBIs, a .830 OPS and 3.2 WAR for the Reds this season. A good second half should render him in conversation when it comes to voting for NL MVP.
