“I hate losing more than I love winning” – Masyn Winn opens up on rookie season highs, lows, and his drive to keep getting better

Masyn Winn started turning heads at a young age. When he was 15, he was named to USA Baseball's under-15 National Team, becoming an MVP in the Pan American AA Championship.

After high school, he originally committed to play college ball for the University of Arkansas. However, he would forgo his college commitment after the St. Louis Cardinals drafted him in 2020.

Winn would make his MLB debut in August during the 2023 season and became the team's starting shortstop in 2024. He would love to make St. Louis a contender again, detailing his competitive mindset on MLB Network Radio.

"I hate losing more than I love winning, and I feel like a lot of people say that, but I truly mean that. [Losing] is something that I've never gotten used to, I've never reallly done it," said Winn.

Like many professional athletes, Winn is not used to losing. Growing up, he was always on elite competitive teams, which is something the Cardinals are not. They have missed the postseason over the last two years.

"I'm not a big fan of losing, I'd rather win 162 if I could, you know, I think everybody would. But. that's is down to everything [from] ping pong to checkers. I mean, I hate losing for sure," said Winn.

Masyn Winn had a great first full year as a rookie in 2024. He played in 150 games, hitting .267/.314/.416 with 15 home runs and 57 runs batted in. He was able to find some power toward the end, which is a great sign.

However, Winn understands he still has room to grow. He detailed what he would like to improve on this winter, which should make the fanbase excited.

"Going forward, I would like to hit for more average, hit more homers, and get that OPS up and really help the team on the offensive side" said Winn.

Winn would like to become a better all-around hitter. While he was happy with the year he had, he knows he could bring in more value and will work hard over the winter.

Expect to see an improved Winn at the plate in 2025. He will be a player fans will want to keep a close eye on as he makes the jump to his second full year in the league.
