"I said to my wife, that was the second time in my life I wanted to fight somebody" - Mookie Betts opens up about fan grabbing him in World Series
The Los Angeles Dodgers came back from a five-run deficit to defeat the New York Yankees 7-6 in Game 5 on Wednesday night as Mookie Betts became a three-time World Series champion.
The Dodgers outfielder shared his thoughts on their run to the Fall Classic title, including the fan interference incident when a couple of Yankees supporters snatched at his arm as he went to grab a foul ball in the Game 4 defeat on Tuesday.
The Dodgers suffered an 11-4 beating from the Yankees on Tuesday before two Yankees fans were dismissed from the stands for deterring Mookie Betts as he reached into the right field bleachers to catch a flyball. The pair of home fans not only interfered with the play but also grabbed hold of Betts' arm and tried to take the ball out of his glove.
Mookie Betts shared his thoughts on the incident with former World Series winners David Ortiz, Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter after Game 5.
"That was wild man," Betts said (2:49). "I've never experienced anything like that in my life. I said to my wife that was the second time in my life I've ever wanted to fight someone.
"But I get it," he added. "I don't know if he was trying to get the ball. I don't know what he was really trying to do. But he had to do what he had to do. It is what it is."
The two fans were denied entry to Yankee Stadium for Game 5 on Wednesday after the MLB revoked their tickets.
"That was a lot of emotions": Mookie Betts on Dodgers' comeback win
The Los Angeles Dodgers pulled off an outstanding comeback to beat the New York Yankees in Game 5 to win the World Series after trailing by five runs at the end of four innings.
The Dodgers, though, responded by scoring five runs in the fifth inning to tie the clash, capitalizing on the errors from the Yankees defense.
"That was lot of emotions, being down (by) five early," Mookie Betts said (0:23). "They came out swinging. As you knew they would.
"Kike (Hernandez) said in the second innning that we had a lot of ball to play; all we had to do was score one," Betts added. "Score one, and then we go from there. We were able to score one. I know they helped us out a little. But you've got to do what you've got to do, and, at the point, we just kept applying pressure."
Mookie Betts won his first World Series ring with the Boston Red Sox in 2018 before adding another with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the COVID-19-shortened 2020 campaign. On Wednesday, he became the only active MLB player to win three Fall Classic titles.
