"I don't think it's only about one or two players" - Juan Soto reflects on former Yankees teammate Luis Severino’s 'two good hitters' comments
New York Yankees superstar Juan Soto recently discussed comments made by the New York Mets' Luis Severino. On Friday, the former Yankees pitcher made remarks about the team following some playful teasing from his former teammates.
After knowing that Severino will not be pitching in the upcoming Subway Series, his former Yankees teammates joked in their group chat that he's afraid to face them.
“I’m not afraid. Right now, you only have two good hitters. I can walk those two guys. It’s always friendly competition with players I’ve already played with. It’s going to be fun, and hopefully in the future I can face them,” Severino said (via MLB.com).
Luis Severino called Juan Soto and Aaron Judge the two good hitters that the New York Yankees have. When asked about Severino's comments, Soto replied:
“It is what it is. They can think whatever they want. At the end of the day, we trust and believe in every single guy in here and I think we have everything that we need to show them that we can do it,” Soto said.
“I mean, we did it in the first half. We dominated most of the first half so I think when a team does that I don’t think it’s only about one or two players – it takes every single guy in the lineup and our relievers, bullpen, everything. So I think it’s not only a two-player team, it’s a really good team right now.”
Luis Severino started his major league career in 2015 with the Bronx Bombers and was with the team until the end of the 2023 season. In December 2023, he inked a one-year, $13 million contract with the New York Mets.
Yankees' Juan Soto focused on winning the upcoming Subway Series with the Mets
After two straight losses, Juan Soto and the New York Yankees got a stellar 9-1 victory against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday. Despite a rough patch, having lost 12 of their last 20 games, Soto is focused on the future rather than dwelling on the past.
“We’re just gonna try to win games. Whatever happened in the past is in the past. We’re focused on what’s gonna happen in this series, we’re gonna try to win that series and keep it rolling,” Juan Soto said (via SNY TV).
Against the Rays, the New York Yankees offense recorded 15 hits on 37 at-bats, bringing in nine RBIs, drawing three walks and striking out 10 times. They will start their two-game Subway Series against the New York Mets on Tuesday.
