“If you come here and try to serenade my wife, I’m throwing elbows at you” - Mookie Betts shares hilarious conversation on his meeting with Usher
Mookie Betts is among one of the most genial and fun-loving players in the MLB. The Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder shared a funny anecdote about his recent meeting with Usher, in which he jokingly threatened the R&B superstar if Betts found the latter serenading to his wife.
Usher is regarded as one of the most influential contemporary R&B musicians who released his first self-titled debut album in 1994 at the age of 15. Since then, Usher has recorded nine No. 1 singles and sold over 100 million records worldwide to become one of the largest-selling music artists of all time.
The 45-year-old has also generated a reputation for being a womanizer over his long career.
On Sunday, the Los Angeles Dodgers faced the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park and Mookie Betts discussed his meeting with Usher the previous evening when he was mic'd up during the game.
"It was a good meeting," Betts said. "I told him that I was able to go to his last show. He goes around and serenades the women. And I'm like, 'this is awesome'. I'd seen women melt."
"Then I told him. 'Listen, Usher, I'll mess with you the long way, the longest of long ways. But if you come over and serenade my wife, I'm throwing elbows at you.' I told him that I'm diving in on him. Immediately," he added.
Although Mookie Betts was in a jovial mood when he said those words to Usher, he may have also been saying what was in his heart.
He got to do what he got to do: Mookie Betts on Usher
When Mookie Betts recounted his meeting with Usher on live broadcast, it left both the television announcers cackling with laughter. However, the story was not over as Betts said that the response from Usher was not promising.
"No, he had the confidence to tell me, 'hey, I'm going back on tour, so there is another chance,'" Betts said.
"I'm like, 'wait, Usher. No, no.' But it is what it is. He got to do what he got to do," he added with a large smile.
Despite trying his utmost, it seems Betts had to eventually give up his plea and let Usher do his own thing.
