In Photos: Gerrit Cole's wife Amy captures son Everett steal the show in cute Yankees jacket for World Series Game 5
While pitching in the World Series is nothing new for Gerrit Cole, the New York Yankees pitcher started a World Series game for the first time in the presence of his kids, Everett, 4 and Caden, 1. The 2023 AL Cy Young winner previously pitched in the 2019 World Series for the Houston Astros. He made two starts, one which resulted in a win and the other in a loss.
Coming into Wednesday's Game 5, Cole pitched in Game 1 and despite his splendid efforts, the Yankees would go on to lose in extra innings against the LA Dodgers.
On Wednesday, Gerrit Cole took the mound in another must-win game for them if they want to keep the World Series alive. Cole's wife Amy posted photos of her kids from the Yankees Stadium.
Cole's son Everett was decked out in a Yankees jacket with the pitcher's name written behind it.
The kids also prepared a sign to cheer up their dad's team:
"Yankee fan today tomorrow forever.”
Amy also shared that this will be the first World Series attendance for Everett and Caden.
“First World Series game for these two tonight,” she wrote.
Yankees' defensive breakdown in fifth inning spoils Gerrit Cole's stellar start
If the Yankees end up losing Game 5 and the World Series, then Gerrit Cole isn't one to be blamed. Cole went past the Dodgers' star-studded batting lineup with ease, allowing almost nothing in the first four innings.
Kike Hernandez started the fifth inning with a single to right field off Cole. Tommy Edman flied out the ball to center field in what should be an easy out. However, Aaron Judge dropped the catch as the Dodgers set up a man in running position.
Next up, a throwing error by Anthony Volpe led to only one out in what should have been a double play. Cole stormed back with consecutive strikeouts to retire Gavin Lux and Shohei Ohtani. Another misuse from the Yankees infield defense allowed Mookie Betts to reach first base while driving in a run, as the Dodgers cut the lead to 5-1.
This was followed by Freddie Freeman's two-run single, which drove in Tommy Edman and Will Smith, as they cut the lead down to 5-3. Finally, Teoscar Hernandez hit the ball to deep center field, which allowed Betts and Freeman to come around and score, as a 5-0 lead suddenly evaporated to 5-5 through no fault of Gerrit Cole.
