"It was the appropriate time to make a change" - When Red Sox's Dave Dombrowski opened up on firing John Farrell despite his successful career
Following the 2017 season, Dave Dombrowski and the Boston Red Sox fired manager John Farrell. This was a surprise to many as the Sox performed well under Farrell's guide.
During his five seasons with the club, they went 432-378. However, Dombrowski felt it was time for the team to go in a new direction.
Dombrowski did not go into much detail on why they decided to move on from Farrell. He just believed it was the right time to make a managerial change, via The Associated Press.
"I thought it was the appropriate time to make a change for the betterment of the organization," Dave Dombrowski said.
While Farrell won a World Series title in 2013 during his first season in Boston, the team was starting to slip. They had just lost David Ortiz to retirement, and Dombrowski wanted a fresh start.
"I think you can measure success in a lot of different ways and that's very successful. ... For me, the ultimate success is winning the world championship" Dombrowski said.
Dombrowski wanted to find somebody who would take this team to the next level. He quickly found his guy, who is still managing the club to this day.
Dave Dombrowski hires Alex Cora to be the next Red Sox manager
It did not take long for Dave Dombrowski to settle on hiring Alex Cora to be the Red Sox's next manager. Cora, a former player, got his start coaching with the Houston Astros in 2016.
Cora served as the Astros' bench coach during the 2017 season. He had a few instances where he served as manager following a managerial ejection, giving him some experience.
Cora interviewed for the position when the Astros were still fighting in the postseason. He had a great interview, and Boston felt good about where their future was heading.
That first season in Boston, the club was elite. They went 108-54 that year, winning the American League East. They then found themselves in the postseason where they had an incredible run.
Boston took down the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1, winning the World Series. However, that would be the last World Series title to date.
It has been a struggle over the last few seasons to get anything going. From the talent on their roster to the competitiveness of the AL East, it has been tough sailing for Boston.
