"It'd be an unbelievable experience" - Mets manager Carlos Mendoza on potential 'dream come true' Subway World Series with Yankees

The New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1 in the fourth game of the NLDS at Citi Field on Wednesday, winning the series 3-1 and punching their ticket for the championship series. Francisco Lindor was the hero for the hosts on the day, as he turned a one-run deficit into a commanding 4-1 lead with one swing in the bottom of the sixth inning.

On the AL side of the playoffs, the New York Yankees followed suit and won their ALDS against the Kansas City Royals, registering a 3-1 win at Kauffman Stadium in game four. Giancarlo Stanton continued his impressive playoff form as he batted in Aaron Judge for the Yankees' third run.

Speaking to SNY on Friday, Oct. 11, Carlos Mendoza talked about a potential Mets vs Yankees showdown in the World Series.

"It'd be amazing, it'd be an unbelievable experience. Like I said, for the city of New York and the two fan bases, it'd be like a dream come true." Mendoza said [0:14]
"Don't wanna get too far ahead, but the fact that the two teams are in a position to do something special, is a great feeling for the Mets and the Yankees as well." Mendoza added [0:26]

Looking back at the last Mets vs Yankees World Series clash

As the New York Mets and New York Yankees continue to build up a head of steam at the perfect time in the baseball season, there is a growing anticipation of the two cross-town rivals from the NL and AL facing off in an epic World Series. The 'Subway Series' between the Yankees and Mets has taken place on the biggest stage only once before, in 2000.

The defending World Series and AL champions faced the NL champions in a best of seven series, with the Yankees eventually running out 4-1 winners to complete a three-peat. Yankees legend Derek Jeter was named the MVP of the series.

There is a long way to go still, both sides have to first successfully navigate a seven-game championship series. But, the way the two teams are playing currently, there is a good chance of a repeat of 2000, and the cross-town rivals meeting at the 2024 World Series.
