Jazz Chisholm Jr. Injury Update: Yankees versatile infielder likely headed to IL, uncertain if surgery is needed
Jazz Chisholm Jr. is headed for the injured list after the results of an MRI conducted on Tuesday came in. According to New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone, the versatile infielder suffered a UCL injury. Chisholm and the club are now contemplating whether surgery is needed or not.
In Monday's 12-2 loss against the Chicago White Sox, Chisholm ran from second on Anthony Volpe's infield hit. While he made a successful dash to home plate, he injured his left elbow in the process in the fifth inning. Despite that, he stayed in the game until the seventh inning and was subsequently replaced by Ben Rice:
“We’ll probably have a better idea after all the doctors weigh in over the next 24 hours,” Boone said. “He’s bummed out because he wanted to be in the lineup today. He woke up today feeling like, ‘I’m playing today.’ Let’s see what we have, and hopefully it’s not something that’s too long.”
After the fifth inning, Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s imaging at the ballpark came back negative. However, he seemed to be in discomfort while in the dugout soon after:
“My adrenaline was still going, so I didn’t feel it right away,” Chisholm said. “An inning went by, just sitting there, and I started to feel it a little bit.”
Aaron Boone hopeful for Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s swift return
The Yankees are likely to put Chisholm on the injured list on Wednesday, with him still on the trip to Chicago. An addition to the starting lineup is expected to be on the cards.
“Obviously, he’s been really impactful for us,” Boone added. “Hopefully this is something that’s a shorter period and we’ll get him back and rolling. It’s certainly tough to not have him in there, with what he’s meant to this team already. We’ll just do our best to support him and get him right.”
Chisholm Jr., who was acquired from the Miami Marlins at the trade deadline, has been everything the Yankees wanted so far. Since changing teams, he has gone 18-for-57 with one double, seven homers and 11 RBIs.
It remains to be seen what the player decides to do. If he opts for surgery, it will certainly be a big setback to the Yankees' postseason aspirations. The Bronx Bombers are currently tied for first place in the AL East standings with an identical 70-50 record with the Baltimore Orioles.
