"Juan Soto is not an elderly woman" - MLB analyst pokes fun at social media connection of Steve Cohen's wife, Francisco Lindor, JD Martinez
The race to sign Juan Soto is seemingly heating up. The New York Mets are among the favorites to acquire the superstar slugger. Soto is following Mets shortstop Franciso Lindor and free agent JD Martinez on Instagram. Owner Steve Cohen's wife, Alexandra, is following him in return.
The New York Mets are reportedly among the five teams who have approached Soto this offseason. According to MLB insider Hector Gomez, the Mets have already tabled an offer worth $660 million. Therefore, some believe that reports of him following Lindor and Martinez on Instagram are a clear indication that he might sign with them.
However, veteran broadcaster Michael Kay could not help taking a dig at that notion.
"It is funny, though, how people are trying to do this detective sleuthing. So, it came out that Alex Cohen, Steve's wife, now follows Juan Soto on Facebook, and now Juan Soto is now following Francisco Lindor and J.D. Martinez," Kay said before correcting himself. "Instagram. That's right. I misspoke."
"That's a big misspeak," replied his partner La Greca before reminding the fans that Soto is a superstar baseball player making a business decision.
"Juan Soto is not an elderly woman trying out to figure out who she wants to vote for. I know they are both on social media; I know they are both owned by the same company."
This coming from Kay was no surprise since he is the long-time play-by-play announcer for the New York Yankees (another team interested in the outfielder) on YES Network.
Francisco Lindor is the face of the Mets franchise. He finished as the runner-up for the National League MVP behind Shohei Ohtani.
Outstanding 2024 campaign for Juan Soto saw him finishing third in AL MVP voting
The New York Yankees traded for Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres last off-season on a one-year, $31 million deal (via arbitration). He more than lived up to the billing.
He batted .288/.419/.569 during the regular season with 178 OPS+, 109 RBIs, and a career-high 41 home runs. Moreover, Soto was the best hitter for the Yankees in the postseason, helping them claim their first pennant in 15 years.
Soto earned his fourth All-Star Game selection this year and finished in third place in the American League MVP voting, besides winning the Silver Slugger award for the fifth time in his career.
