Juan Soto's $700M contract possibility might come true as "Mets' money will be too much to say no to," claims MLB insider
Juan Soto’s free agency is a topic of discussion in baseball with the MLB off season is getting hotter. It is still not clear what his next destination will be, as the suspense in the Soto saga continues to build up.
In a post on X, Jared Carrabis, an MLB insider, gave his opinion on this matter and proposed that even though Soto may like some other options just as Xander Bogaerts did under his free agency in 2022, he will not be able to turn down the financial prowess of the New York Mets.
On Saturday, Carrabis expressed his opinion regarding the Soto saga.
"This is just my opinion, but my read on the Juan Soto situation is that it’s going to be similar to the Xander Bogaerts situation in that he might prefer another organization’s secondary reasons for signing there, but ultimately the Mets’ money will be too much to say no to."
Carrabis draws a similarity between Soto's situation and that of Bogaerts during his free agency. Bogaerts ultimately chose to sign with the San Diego Padres despite having other preferences, largely due to their financial commitment. Similarly, Soto may find himself in a position where the Mets’ offer is simply too attractive compared to any secondary reasons.
Soto reportedly has offers from several teams, with the suitors being the New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays.
The proposed contracts are worth at least $600 million. This baseline figure shows a fierce competition for his signature, with some estimates suggesting that Soto could command a deal closer to $750 million over 15 years.
Soto’s decision may ultimately come down to the Mets’ money over everything else
The New York Mets' financial resources can outbid and financially overwhelm other teams easily.
They will be reportedly at the forefront and not just present in the bidding for Soto. The final contract of Soto could exceed Shohei Ohtani's record $700 million deal with the Dodgers according to reports.
Considering that Soto is about to engage in the last contractual agreement process in his career, it is obvious that he will want to earn as much as possible.
Soto joined the Yankees from the San Diego Padres on Dec. 6, 2023. He had a good first season with the Yankees in which he had a batting average of .288, an OBP of .419, a slugging percentage of .569 and an OPS of .989 with 109 RBIs. Besides that, he stole seven bases and hit 41 homers throughout the 2024 season while playing 157 games.
As Soto narrows down his choices, potentially deciding by the end of the Winter Meetings in Dallas, Texas which will start on December 9 and end on December 12.
