Kike Hernandez recounts unfortunate toilet tale during 2020 NLDS plate appearance
Boston Red Sox utility man Kike Hernandez is comfortable in virtually any position on the field. But now, he may have taken that comfort to a new level, revealing a little too much information in a recent take.
In a promotional video for the Red Sox, Kike Hernandez was asked about his most embarrassing moment. A warning to those who are squeamish because the 31-year-old Puerto Rican gave a little too much information.
Hernandez relayed a story of when he was taking antibiotics for a tooth infection during the 2020 playoffs. The diarrhea-inducing antibiotic treatment caused him to strike out after three pitches and return to the dugout. Upon finishing the at-bat, Hernandez said:
"When I went in the dugout, I went straight to the bathroom, pulled my pants down, completely sh*rted."

During the 2020 NLDS that Hernandez was referring to, he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Although the Dodgers swept the San Diego Padres in the series, Kike Hernandez himself went 0-for-6, perhaps owing to his underlying difficulties.
Hernandez and the Los Angeles Dodgers went on to win the 2020 World Series over the Tampa Bay Rays. The following February, Hernandez penned a two-year deal worth $14 million with the Boston Red Sox.
His first season with the Red Sox in 2021 represented the best offensive season of Hernandez's career. He appeared in 134 games, hitting .250./.337/.449 with 35 doubles, 20 home runs and 65 RBIs.

Injuries limited Hernandez to just 93 games in 2022 as the Boston Red Sox finished last in the AL East. After the departure of shortstop Xander Bogaerts, it appears as though there is an opening for a starting shortstop role for Hernandez this season. Some of his plays so far in the preseason make him look like a good fit for the role.
Some fans are turning flippant Kike Hernandez quote to indict his team
While it may be true that a 69-93 record last year wasn't a light-hearted matter, some fans consider this off-the-record toilet tale to be proof that the Red Sox aren't a serious team. What's the point of being a public figure such as an MLB player if you don't say something a little off-color sometimes?
