Logan Webb makes feelings known about Willy Adames after San Francisco Giants' record-breaking $182,000,000 deal

San Francisco Giants ace Logan Webb is "super excited" to welcome the newest signee Willy Adames. The shortstop signed with the Giants on a record seven-year, $182 million contract, last week.

This is the biggest contract the Giants have handed out in franchise history, surpassing the previous-best Buster Posey's $167 million deal, signed in 2013. Interestingly, Posey's signature will be on the Adames contract since the legendary catcher is now the president of baseball operations for the Giants.

On Monday's episode of JM baseball, Webb was excited to learn about the deal, knowing that he have an elite shortstop to protect his groundballs.

"Oh, I was super excited," Webb said (10:40 onwards). "Willie's a guy that, I mean, I’ve played against him a lot. He’s done well against me. He’s one of those guys that’s a tough out. He’s hit two homers against me in spring, two homers in the regular season —I mean, it’s just kind of what he does."
"I think one of the coolest things was Buster came out and said, 'Hey, we’re trying to get a shortstop,' and they got the best one. So, I’m excited. I know Chappie is super excited, all the guys are super excited. It’s going to be—man, that left side of the infield has got to be one of the best in baseball. So, as a pitcher, as a ground ball guy, I’m pretty excited about it."

Willy Adames' defensive drop not a concern for Giants top chair Buster Posey

While Willy Adames is yet to win a Gold Glove, his play on shortstop has been solid defensively, but he saw a drop in his defensive metrics in 2024.

His negative 16 defensive runs saved was league average but a big drop from 17 DRS in the prior two seasons. However, Buster Posey during a press conference, let it known, that it won't be a big issue going forward.

"I experienced it myself from time to time. You have a great defensive year, then the next one's down," Posey said via NBC Sports. "Sometimes, I think the way the metrics work, some errors that you make will probably paint a picture that's not as true as what your eyes know for a defender.
"I think some of what we saw was throwing errors last year that, one way or another, can be cleaned up..."There was never anything glaring we saw where we were like, 'Ah, is this guy really a great defender?' We believe wholeheartedly he's a great defender."

The Giants are in a competitive NL West division where every team except the Colorado Rockies are in win-now mode. The Giants need help in pitching as well and hope that Adames' presence could lure his former Brewers teammate Corbin Burnes to sign with the franchise this offseason.
