Los Angeles Dodgers fans react to report team is early favorite to sign Manny Machado next winter: "Zero chance this happens," "No way he comes here"

According to reports, the Los Angeles Dodgers are among the "early favorites" to sign current San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado as a free agent next winter.

Machado made headlines earlier this week by saying he intends to opt out of his contract with the Padres after this season. With storylines currently short in the early days of Spring Training, many MLB analysts began to speculate where the six-time All-Star will go forward if he doesn't return to San Diego.

Dodgers Nation latched on to a report by Bleacher Report that noted Los Angeles among the early favorites to sign Machado to a new deal. However, Dodgers fans did not believe the speculative rumor. Machado didn't make a ton of friends in the City of Angels after Los Angeles dealt for him for their 2018 playoff push, and most Dodgers fans are not interested in a reunion.

@DodgersNation Talented player, but wasn't happy when he was here before. Don't see things changing.
@DodgersNation Zero chance this happens. Friedman isn't paying prime prices for the downside of his career.
@DodgersNation No way he comes here

Manny Machado hit .273 with 13 home runs and 42 RBI over 66 games with the Dodgers after Los Angeles acquired him on July 18, 2018, for a package of prospects. However, he signed with the Padres—a top Dodgers rival—as a free agent after Los Angeles lost the 2018 World Series to the Boston Red Sox.

@DodgersNation Oh hell no! Been there, done that, and he did nothing for the Dodger organization.
@DodgersNation Talented beyond belief, but he clearly wasn't happy when he was here the first time. Doesn't seem to be a fit.
@DodgersNation Ok🤣
When he was in LA, they offered him a v good # based on their valuation. He followed the $. Now he older, on the downside of physical prime & no longer a premier SS but is understandably seeking MORE than before and u think Friedman will bite? When its far less favorable?!

Manny Machado signed a 10-year, $300 million contract with the Padres in February 2019. According to Spotrac, had he not decided to opt out after 2023, Machado would have earned an Average Annual Value of $30 million per season and a yearly signing bonus of $2 million for each season through 2028.

According to multiple reports, the 30-year-old Machado is seeking a new 10-year contract in the range of $400 million. With the Los Angeles Dodgers expected to pursue prospective free agent superstar Shohei Ohtani next winter, those numbers are likely more than the team wants to pay.

@DodgersNation FO would rather spend its fortune on Ohtani and not Manny...been there, done that
@DodgersNation They can’t afford him and Shoei. I’d rather have Shoei
@DodgersNation Oh come on now. No way the Dodgers sign Manny. Urias and Shohei are their targets

But as Bleacher Report's speculation does note, if Ohtani does sign elsewhere, Manny Machado might make a nice consolation prize.

@DodgersNation For anyone in these comments saying hell no and yadi yadi yada. If you truly don’t want him you don’t want the chance of winning. Get a grip, the dudes a stud. Dudes a 2x gold glover and would have more if Nolan wasn’t in the NL. A 6x all star and a 2x first team.

Justin Turner had been the Los Angeles Dodgers' third baseman after Machado left for the Padres. However, Turner, who had started playing increasingly as a designated hitter in 2022, signed as a free agent with the Red Sox this winter.

Super-utility man Max Muncy is currently slated to be the Dodgers' third baseman this season. A reunion of the Dodgers and Machado might make sense on paper, but there are a lot of other moves that would have to play out to make it happen.
