"Mets shirt underneath that" "He rolls with another team" - MLB fans puzzled by Donovan Mitchell repping Guardians at ALDS Game 5 against Tigers

The Cleveland Guardians had an unexpected fan in the stands in the form of Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell at their American League Division Series finale against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. He was in attendance with his teammates Darius Garland and Tristan Thompson, but the social media space quickly pointed out Mitchell's affection for the New York Mets.

Mitchell is a vocal Mets supporter. His father, Donovan Mitchell Sr., is a minor league baller turned front office executive for the New York Mets. The Cavs #45 has spent most of his childhood in the Mets clubhouse and has since become an ardent fan.

His presence at the Guardians' ALDS encounter shocked fans as they wouldn't expect Mitchell to support any team apart from the Mets, even though he is one of the faces of Cleveland sports. They questioned the five-time All-Star on X (formerly Twitter).

"Donovan Mitchell might be there but he rolls with another team over there in New York lol," a fan commented.
"What the flip dude, there better be a Mets shirt underneath that," a fan wrote.
"Spida is a Mets fan tho," another fan wrote.

Some fans were a lot more outspoken as they called Mitchell out for not being a true Mets fan.

"Mitchell fraud Mets fan," one said.
"SPIDA BRO WHATCHA DOIN," another fan wrote.
"Take that jersey off bro," a fan said.

Guardians set to face Yankees in ALCS after Game 5 win

Donovan Mitchell would be satisfied with the Guardians' result as they downed the Detroit Tigers 7-3 in the winner-take-all finale on Saturday. Cleveland outfielder Lane Thomas hit a go-ahead grand slam in the fifth inning against Tigers starter and Cy Young candidate Tarik Skubal. Emmanuel Clase closed it with six outs in the eighth and ninth for the win.

Cleveland will now face the New York Yankees in the AL Championship Series. For Mitchell, there remains a chance that the Mets face the Guardians in the World Series, with Queens' team going up against the Dodgers in the NL Championship Series.
