MLB fans baffled by Oli Marmol calling out Willson Contreras following bizarre position switch: “Going to lose his clubhouse by Memorial Day”

St. Louis Cardinals fans have reached a tipping point with manager Oli Marmol, with calls for his sacking intensifying following Willson Contreras's position change.

The Cardinals haven't had the greatest start to the season, and the negative opinion about the think tank is worrying for everybody associated with the organization.

Marmol's most recent peculiar position switch of catcher Contreras has baffled fans and pundits alike.

When asked what Willson Contreras needed to do to potentially be used in the outfield -- a spot he played some with the Cubs -- #STLCards manager Oli Marmol said, "I think the question should be what does Contreras need to do to get behind the plate, not playing the outfield?"

Fans berated the 36-year-old manager on Twitter, mocking him from all corners.

Baffling decisions like his are avenues for one to lose the trust of the clubhouse, and Oli Marmol is treading down a very dark road. Marmol will have to oversee a serious change in decisions and tactics to win back the trust of the fans.

this is insane. would be a fireable offense if the cardinals org was any good twitter.com/JohnDenton555/…
@JohnDenton555 Didn’t he just say he wasn’t catching and would be playing some OF? Maybe Im remembering that wrong. I cannot do this for another 100 plus games and maybe beyond.
@JohnDenton555 Because no catcher has ever gone to a new team and transitioned successfully. This is a coaching/organization issue - not a player. If you give a chef quality ingredients and he can’t create a decent meal/menu you don’t blame the food. #FireMo&Oliver
@JohnDenton555 He needs to play how he always played. He’s an all star catcher. It’s Oli and the #StLcards organization that’s the problem. They are too full of pride to admit they made mistakes with this team. Pride ALWAYS comes before a fall.
@JohnDenton555 What he needs to do to get behind the plate is have a Manager who puts him there. An M who understands his team has paid for a quality #1, daily, catcher and will act that way. Not pretend that catching is the problem, when there are much bigger issues that need to be managed.
@JohnDenton555 This is twice this year he has called out a player vs handling things in house.
@JohnDenton555 well? what’s the answer? cus nobody within the organization seems to want to explain what it is he’s doing wrong
@JohnDenton555 Well he already accepted $87.5 million to do just that, and skipped out in the WBC so he could get to know his pitchers. I’d say he did his part.

Willson Contreras is a 3-time MLB All-Star

Venezuelan Willson Contreras was signed by the Chicago Cubs as an international free agent in 2009 and he made his professional debut with the Dominican Summer League Cubs that year. He made his MLB debut in 2016 with the Cubs.

A catcher by trade, Contreras's biggest accolade to day is the 2016 World Series championship. He has also been voted an MLB All-Star thrice (2018, 2019, and 2022). He signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as a free agent after the 2022 season.
