MLB fans mock Cy Young pitcher Trevor Bauer after decision to sign with Yokohama backfires: "Dude got yeeted into the minor leagues in Japan"
The decision by Trevor Bauer to move to the Nippon Professional Baseball League seemed to make sense at the time. The Los Angeles Dodgers took the call to cut ties with the pitcher in January. Bauer was coming off a long and draining appeal process with the league and a change of scenery seemed like the smart move.
Less than six months later, Bauer has been demoted by the Yokohama DeNA Baystars to the minors. Hindsight is 20/20 but no one could have predicted a decline of this magnitude for the former Cy Young winner.
The decision to jumpstart his career in Japan seems to have backfired for Bauer. The 32-year-old signed a one-year, $4 million deal with Yokohama in March. Whether it is rust, culture shock or just Bauer having difficulty adjusting to the Japanese game, he has struggled on the mound.
MLB fans took to Twitter to react to the news of his demotion. Many of them roasted him for his drastic decline:
Trevor Bauer last pitched in the majors for the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 28, 2021. Shortly after that, he was suspended by the league following allegations of sexual assault. The 324-game suspension was a record for an MLB player under the league's domestic violence and sexual assault policy. He appealed the suspension and was reinstated in December 2022.
Trevor Bauer won the prestigious Cy Young Award after an exceptional 2020 season with the Cincinnati Reds
At his peak, Trevor Bauer was considered one of MLB's most dangerous pitchers. He had an impressive 10-year career with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Cleveland Guardians, Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers. Bauer was an All-Star in 2018 and won the Cy Young Award in 2020.
Overall, he finished with an 83-69 record and a 3.79 ERA in the majors.
Since joining the Yokohama DeNA Baystars, Bauer has been poor on the mound. Over three starts, he has a 1-2 record and an 8.40 ERA. He has managed to get through just 15 innings and has already conceded five home runs and 26 hits.
The Japanese club will hope that a stint in the majors can help Bauer make the necessary adjustments. If not, Bauer could be looking for a new club in 2024.
