MLB fans praise New York Mets' ticket plan for college students "Yankees better do this"
The New York Mets are spending approximately $370 million on their players this year, making their payroll one of the highest in the MLB.
To compensate for the mad spending, Mets fans have seen ticket prices skyrocket to see their team in action at Citi Field in Queens. On average, the price of a ticket to a New York Mets home game last season was in excess of $77 last season, making it the second-most expensive draw in the MLB.
Under the ownership of Steve Cohen, the Mets have spent with abandon. Cohen is a New York-based hedge fund billionaire who purchased a majority stake in the team in 2020. Now, he wants to see more younger fans coming to Citi Field.
According to Mets writer Joe Pantorno, the team is exploring a plan that would make tickets accessible to students for no more than $15.
"Working on a ticket plan for college students with price points at $15, will all be through text. Goal is to bring back a demographic that had previously been priced out of baseball," Pantorno tweeted.
New York Mets fans are known for being some of the most passionate spectators in the MLB. By and large, the announcement received an overwhelmingly positive response on Twitter.
While there is no evidence that the directive was an idea of Steve Cohen, fans are thanking the billionaire.
Cohen previously spoke about taking the train from his suburban Long Island home with his friends as a child to watch the Mets at Shea Stadium.
Fans of other teams such as the Boston Red Sox also shared that their team has enacted similar schemes over the past several years to great success. Others used the Mets' announcement as an opportunity to press their own teams for similar offers.
While $15 tickets are surely a step down from the average ticket price last year, fans will still need to take transportation, food and beverages and souvenirs into account when attending a Mets home game.
New York Mets owner Steve Cohen's business mind is at it again
In December, the Mets signed Justin Verlander, who won the 2022 Cy Young Award with the Houston Astros, to a record-setting-deal. Although they are one of the richer teams in the MLB, deals like this put a strain on any team's finances. Cohen knows that a discount ticket plan like this will attract younger fans and bolster their engagement, profiting the team in the long term.
