MLB Hot Stove Rumors: Mets, Yankees among teams targeting Alex Bregman as free agent market heats up
The MLB free agent market is heating up, and the teams in on Alex Bregman are making themselves known. According to the latest SNY report, both the New York Yankees and New York Mets are in on the third baseman.
The Houston Astros are still in play to re-sign Bregman, but the chances of him going back are iffy at best. The Astros just traded for a third baseman and are linked to a potential move for another.
He also reportedly rejected a six-year deal from Houston, so it's unlikely that Bregman will return home after his stint in free agency. Per SNY, the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays are also in on the third baseman.
The Mets and Yankees just went through a bidding war for Juan Soto, and another one could be in store for Bregman. However, one of these teams makes more sense for another big contract than the other.
Bregman is a third baseman and doesn't really play any other positions. That means he'd likely play third with his new team. The Mets have Mark Vientos there, and he's coming off a brilliant season.
The Yankees have Jazz Chisholm Jr. there, but Chisholm began his MLB career as a second baseman and would move over if the Yankees landed a third baseman such as Bregman.
MLB insider labels dark horse team for Alex Bregman
While the New York Mets and New York Yankees are getting the attention, the Boston Red Sox are in for for Alex Bregman as well, according to Jon Morosi.
The Sox were also in on Juan Soto before being outbid, so it makes sense that they might wade into the water with Bregman. Per Chron, Morosi said:
"There is at least as much of a chance of Bregman going to Boston as Bregman going to Houston. And let's remember the essential reason why Red Sox loom as a possible candidate to invest heavily in someone like Alex Bregman.
"They made a big offer to Soto, made a big offer to Fried, signed neither of them, and then addressed a rotation vacancy by acquiring Garrett Crochet [via trade]."
The Red Sox haven't spent much money this offseason, but they've tried to. They could try again and perhaps succeed with Bregman.
