MLB injury update today: Austin Riley out for 6-8 weeks; Freddie Freeman suffers hairline fracture and more
We are in the penultimate week of August, and from hereon, every game for all MLB teams will be extremely important. Especially given how competitive this year has been, nothing can be left off as teams get into the grind.
Amid this competitive phase, some teams face injuries to their star players, which possibly derails their momentum during an important stretch of the season. Let's take a look at some of these injury updates.
Braves lose another key player, Austin Riley, for at least 6–8 weeks
The Atlanta Braves were the best team in the majors last season. This season, they are in a tight spot to claim a postseason seat; much of this can be attributed to the health of their star players.
Adding one more name to the Braves' already-stacked injured list, Austin Riley suffered a fracture in his right hand, ruling him out for at least the regular season. He may return in the postseason at some point, but the Braves might have to do without him in the coming games.
Freddie Freeman to play through hairline fracture
The Dodgers saw the return of one of their key players, Max Muncy, on Monday, but there was another news waiting around the corner.
During Saturday's game, Freddie Freeman exited the game due to a jammed finger. He missed out on Sunday's game due to swelling on the same finger. Upon imaging, it was found that he suffered a hairline fracture in the middle finger of his right hand.
However, he was part of Monday's lineup against the Seattle Mariners and, as manager Dave Roberts said, will play through injury.
Other injury updates
Max Muncy returns to the Dodgers lineup after being on the injured list for about three months due to a right oblique strain sustained in mid-May.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. will return once the 15-day IL is completed. He was sidelined due to a sprained left elbow.
Hunter Greene was added to the injured list due to right elbow soreness. There's nothing serious in the latest update.
