With the trade deadline now past, MLB teams have locked their rosters for the rest of the season. Meanwhile, most teams dealing with injuries are expecting some of their stars to return. Thus, here's a look at the latest injury updates for July 31.
MLB Injury updates today
#1. Mike Trout shut down from rehab
Mike Trout's rehab has suffered a setback, with the LA Angels superstar being shut down indefinitely, as per general manager Perry Minasian. The 11-time All-Star had surgery on May 3 for a torn left meniscus. He returned to play for Triple-A Salt Lake last week but left the game after just two innings.
“We’re going to shut down his rehab in general,” Minasian said. “He’s going to get re-evaluated. He still doesn’t feel good, so we’ll see where that goes.” [H/T AP News]
Mike Trout has not played in more than 119 MLB games for the past five seasons. He is in the sixth year of his 12-year, $426.5 million contract.
#2. Anthony Rendon placed on IL again by the Angels
Another of the Angels' marquee signings, Anthony Rendon, has hit the injured list again, this time for a lower back inflammation. The infielder played just 14 games after returning from a hamstring sprain that kept him out for most of the season.
The third baseman is in his fourth year of a seven-year, $245 million contract. He has recorded just six RBIs with a .225 batting average and zero homers this season. Overall, for the Angels, he has compiled a .245 average with 22 home runs since 2020, playing a maximum of 59 games in a season.
#3. Christian Walker facing IL stint for the D-backs
Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker has been placed on the IL after leaving the game against the Washington Nationals. According to manager Torey Lovullo, Walker felt discomfort in his oblique after striking out in the first inning and had to be taken out after making a catch in foul territory in the third inning.
Christian Walker has been placed on the 10-day IL. He has been one of the leaders in the lineup for D-backs, averaging .254 with 71 RBIs and 23 home runs this MLB season.
