MLB Injury Update Today: Tyler Glasnow goes on the IL; Christian Yelich undergoes surgery and more
The 2024 MLB season has reached the middle of August, with updates about Tyler Glasnow and Christian Yelich, as the race for the playoffs gets tighter. About 40 more games remain for teams, with almost every one of them missing key players at the moment.
On that note, we look at some of the latetst MLB injury updates from this past Friday.
#1 Tyler Glasnow goes on the IL
The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed their ace Tyler Glasnow on the 15-day IL due to elbow tendinitis on his right arm. He missed his scheduled start on Friday and was replaced by rookie left-hander Justin Wrobleski in the 7-6 win on the road against the St. Louis Cardinals.
This is the second time in as many months that Glasnow has landed on the IL. The 31-year-old earned his maiden All-Star selection last month but was unable to pitch in the game, as he was suffering from issues with his back.
Despite being a nine-year veteran in the big leagues, Tyler Glasnow has only 110 career starts. He has set personal records for games and innings pitched after signing a five-year, $145 million deal with the Dodgers in the off-season. He has a 3.49 ERA and leads the National League with a 0.948 WHIP.
#2 Christian Yelich undergoes surgery
The Milwaukee Brewers have reported that Christian Yelich is resting at home after surgery on his injured back on Friday. He had been going through a rehabilitation program to get ready for the playoffs but will not be able to take any further part this year.
Brewers general manager Matt Arnold talked about how his team hopes to cope without the 32-year-old.
“We’ve overcome a lot this year. We’re going to have to deal with more adversity and we’re OK with that,” Arnold said. “On the bright side, hopefully we get a really happy and healthy and pain-free Christian Yelich in the future.”
The Brewers have a 10-game lead in the NL Central and seem assured of another playoff run.
They have secured five postseason appearances and three division titles in the previous six years, with Yelich being their main leader. He was batting .315/.406/.504 with 152 OPS+ and 11 home runs before being placed on the IL last month.
#3 Triston Casas returns for the Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox welcomed back first baseman Triston Casas to the lineup in a high-scoring 12-10 victory away to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night. Casas was moved to the IL on April 20 after suffering torn cartilage in his left ribcage.
“Every game matters. So I think we don't know which one's going to make the difference. I was trying to come back as soon as possible because every win matters just as much as the next one,” Casas said after the game.
Casas had been going through a rehab assignment in Triple-A with Worcester since July 30. He batted .300/.404/.550 with one home run and seven RBIs from 40 at-bats for the team before rejoining the Red Sox.
