MLB insider reports Scott Boras' high expectations for Juan Soto's pending free agency: "Boras views Soto as among the greatest free agents ever"
San Diego Padres star Juan Soto is set to hit free agency at the conclusion of the 2023 season and is due for a big payday. His agent, Scott Boras, reportedly believes that Soto is one of the greatest free agents of all-time. He even went so far as to compare him to New York Yankees legend Alex Rodriguez, who is one of the greatest players ever.
Considering the fact that Boras is Soto's agent, he is financially motivated to help build this narrative. The more value the baseball world sees in Soto, the more valuable his contract will be. Despite the bias, this opinion holds truth. What more could Soto have done in his MLB career to be deserving fo one of the largest contracts in history?
MLB insider Jon Heyman reported Scott Boras' position via Twitter.
"Scott Boras views Soto as among the greatest free agents ever, right there with Alex Rodriguez. Soto is also 24, six years younger than Machado and Bogaerts," Heyman said.
Any comparison to Alex Rodriguez is seen as an incredible compliment to the kind of player Soto is. Soto has only been in the league for six years and is already on a Hall of Fame pace. He is a two-time All-Star, three-time Silver Slugger and World Series champion from his time with the Washington Nationals.
Now that he is eligible to receive his big money contract, the question is: Where will he sign? Probably at the bottom of the page.
The Padres have to be considered frontrunners to sign him long term, considering they traded for him. The New York Mets, New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers could all make a run at the star. Any team with a proclivitety to spend will be getting in touch, at the very least.
In February 2022, Soto turned down a monster offer from the Nationals, so we have a baseline of what he is hoping for.
"Nationals offered Juan Soto a 13-year, $350M extension before the lockout. He declined and plans to wait for free agency," Bleacher Report tweeted.
Whichever team is lucky enough to sign Juan Soto will have secured a bona fide star.
Juan Soto is looking to win one more championship before hitting free agency
The Padres have not accumulated their vast group of stars to finish in second place. They are targeting a championship and nothing else, and Soto is crucial to getting them there.
He has the championship experience needed to lead his team to the promised land if they live up to expectations.
