MLB Rumors: A Reds-Angles deal could bolster Yankees infield position at trade deadline

The New York Yankees are serious about winning it all this year and the trade deadline could help them further bolster their roster and have an edge over their competitors. MLB Insider Jon Heyman, in his NY Post article, suggested two positional players that could improve the Yankees' infield woes.

The Bronx Bombers haven't been the best when it comes to fielding, especially in the infield. The club has subsequently lost several games due to infielders' errors. Cincinnati Reds' Jonathan India and Los Angeles Angels’ Luis Rengifo are two players Heyman suggested to bolster their infield depth.

India, who made his debut with the Reds in 2021, is having another good year, hitting .278 with six home runs, 35 RBIs and eight stolen bases across 80 games played.

It will likely be tough for the Angels to let go of Rengifo, but they will be all ears if the Yankees are willing to offload future prospects to them in return. The shortstop is having a career year, with him hitting .315, including six home runs, 25 RBIs and 22 stolen bases.

More importantly, both India and Rengifo have been good defensively as well. India has a .992 FPCT, with him only registering two errors on the season. Rengifo has a .973 FPCT and has registered six errors this season.

According to The Athletic, the Yankees may get an offensive boost as they eye a potential deal with the Chicago Cubs, who look like sellers at the trade deadline. One name that is now popping up is former NL MVP Cody Bellinger. The first baseman/center fielder signed a three-year, $80 million contract with opt-outs in place for '25 and '26.

The Yankees could use Bellinger to fill the void left by Anthony Rizzo at first base. Rizzo is out until August due to a right forearm fracture.

Though many think that the Yankees have other priorities, like bolstering the bullpen which at times has been vulnerable this season, the team could look at a versatile acquisition like Bellinger.
