MLB Rumors: Insider reveals Yankees had "no interest" in parting ways with top prospects at trade deadline despite close AL East race
The New York Yankees added three players at the trade deadline. Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins, Mark Leiter Jr. from the Chicago Cubs and Enyel De Los Santos from the San Diego Padres. However, fans were left disappointed, as the Yankees couldn't land big names like Tarik Skubal, Garrett Crochet and Mason Miller, who would have improved the team.
According to Jon Heyman, Brian Cashman & Co. had "no interest" in trading away their top prospects, attributing a weak farm system as a reason. Many Yankees prospects, like Jasson Dominguez, Ben Rice, Austin Wells, Chase Hampton, George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones, were popular names at the trade deadline.
However, the AL East leaders decided to not engage and give away their top prospects for only this season. Many feel they should have made blockbuster trades to increase their World Series odds, but the club chose the conservative way.
Which prospects did the Yankees send away at the trade deadline?
Although the Yankees didn't do away with the top names of their farm system, they depleted it to some extent.
For Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Marlins, they traded away catcher Agustin Ramirez (Yankees No. 20 prospect) and infielders Jared Serna (No. 19 prospect) and Abrahan Ramirez.
For Mark Leiter Jr. from the Cubs, they traded away pitching prospect Jack Neely (the Yankees' No. 22 prospect) and infielder Benjamin Cowles (the Yankees' No. 29 prospect).
For pitcher Enyel De Los Santos and minor league pitcher Thomas Balboni Jr. from the Padres, the Yankees dealt minor league outfielder Brandon Lockridge. They also traded away Caleb Ferguson to the Houston Astros in exchange for international pool money and pitcher Kelly Austin.
However, those they acquired are already wreaking havoc, especially Jazz Chisholm Jr., who crushed four homers, helping the Yankees sweep baseball's best team, the Philadelphia Phillies, at their home turf, Citizens Bank Park.
It remains to be seen if that would be enough for a winning run in the postseason.
