MLB Trade Update: Cardinals, Dodgers, and White Sox close to three-team deal involving Erick Fedde, Tommy Edman and Tommy Pham, per MLB Insider

The Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox are reportedly combining for a massive three-team trade centered on Tommy Edman, Tommy Pham and Erick Fedde. In this deal, Edman lands with LA, and Fedde heads to the Cardinals with Pham. Prospect compensation is what the White Sox earn.

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal reported on X, formerly known as Twitter:

"A three-team trade in which the Cardinals would acquire Erick Fedde, the Dodgers would acquire Tommy Edman and the White Sox would acquire prospects is close, sources tell me."

The Dodgers would land an infielder to help bolster their depth as they await Mookie Betts' return and the Cardinals could get some rotation help for 2025 in the process. The White Sox can continue their rebuild.

The White Sox get Miguel Vargas alongside the Dodgers' number 17 and 23 prospects in Jeral Perez and Alexander Albertus, respectively.

Why the Erick Fedde, Tommy Edman trade makes sense for all parties

This trade works well for all parties. The Dodgers needed infield help and were reportedly interested in Isaac Paredes and Luis Rengifo to fill that hole. Paredes was traded to the Chicago Cubs, and the Dodgers ended up getting Edman instead.

The Cardinals had serious interest in Fedde and earlier Monday, momentum was building. The momentum quickly burst and the deal was made, giving the Cardinals another reliable starter.

While the White Sox did just sign Fedde in free agency, this is arguably the ideal outcome. A bad team could afford to take a risk on a player who flamed out of the MLB and into the KBO and see if he panned out.

If he did, they could flip him for prospects (which they successfully did). If he was bad, they didn't have a team that was dependent on a good pitcher, so it wouldn't have mattered.

It's also a growing trend in modern MLB to have teams that buy and sell. The fact that the Cardinals sold Edman doesn't mean they're calling it a season. In fact, they are also acquiring Tommy Pham from Chicago during this deal, so they're just addressing things individually with an eye on the future as well as the present.
