New York Mets fans frustrated as starting pitcher Jose Quintana leaves Spring Training with fractured rib: "And so it begins" "Dang bummer for Q"
The New York Mets will likely be without Jose Quintana, slated to be the team's fifth starter, for a considerable amount of time. The Mets announced Monday that Quintana has suffered a small stress fracture on the fifth rib on his left side.
Quintana has left the team's spring training camp in Port St. Lucie, Fla., to fly back to New York for further tests. The Mets have not provided a timetable for his return.
The news hit New York Mets fans as hard as a facepalm. Quintana has logged just 1 2/3 innings this spring and is now almost certain to miss at least the beginning of the season.
New York University sports orthopedic surgeon Dr. Spencer Stein told the New York Post:
"Typically (with these injuries), it’s going to be about six weeks to two months of rest and then kind of reassess. A lot of times players after two months can get back to some activities (such as) working out, but as far as pitching, that takes longer."
Last season, Boston Red Sox starter Chris Sale suffered a stress fracture in his right rib cage at the beginning of spring training and was sidelined until a rehab assignment in June.
"Now all I need is to get completely recovered and try to be ready for the beginning of the 2023 MLB season," Quintana said on Instagram on Sunday.
Quintana was signed by the New York Mets on a two-year, $26 million contract over the past offseason. He made 32 starts with the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022, going 6-7 with a 2.93 ERA and 1.21 WHIP.
Mets fans are already looking to Tylor Megill or David Peterson to possibly fill the hole left by Quintana's injury. Megill gave up two hits and one earned run in his lone spring training start. Peterson has made two appearances this spring, one in relief and one start. He has yet to give up a run in four innings, striking out four with three walks. However, he is currently day-to-day with a foot contusion.
New York Mets awaiting further word on Quintana
The New York Mets will likely find out this week how long the team will be without Quintana. The team still has Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Kodai Senga and Carlos Carrasco entrenched as their first four starters.
