New York Yankees fans mock team for Aaron Hicks getting pair of starts after he whines about his limited role: "So we reward a guy who complains"
The New York Yankees' least popular player in recent memory – Aaron Hicks – will be in left field again Tuesday night.
Hicks, already a player most Yankees fans would like to launch into the sun, drew additional ire after manager Aaron Boone said during a weekend news conference that the player had come to him to complain about his lack of playing time in the team's season-opening homestand against the San Francisco Giants.
Boone told the sportswriters, as reported by the New York Post:
"(Hicks) is going to play. I would probably expect him to be in there the next couple of days."
Boone was as good as his word as Aaron Hicks started in left field for Monday's series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies. New York Yankees fans lustily booed Hicks when he his name was announced in the pregame lineup, and those boos only got louder as Hicks went 0-for-4.
Undaunted by Monday's poor showing, Boone has Hicks' name back in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Phillies. Predictably, Yankees fans are not pleased.
New York Yankees fans are in love with the idea of playing as many of their highly-regarded prospects as possible. "Super utility" player Oswaldo Cabrera fits squarely into that way of thinking.
While Cabrera can capably play the left side of the infield as well as the outfield, New Yorkers were tremendously pleased to see him getting the start in left field over Hicks during the opening homestand against the Giants.
Now that the tables have turned and Aaron Hicks is again starting over Cabrera, the fires of angst are once again heating up.
The New York Yankees have not won a World Series since 2009, and with every season that passes in which the team does not claim a 28th MLB championship, the seat in which Boone sits gets hotter and hotter.
Many Yankees fans are blaming Boone for playing Hicks as much as they are blaming Hicks for continually underperforming.
When New York Yankees fans get behind a player, there are great outpourings of boundless love. But when Yankee Nation turns on a player, it is merciless in displays of disapproval. Such is life for Aaron Hicks.
How much longer can New York Yankees keep Aaron Hicks on the team?
For a team with continual postseason aspirations such as the Yankees, the Hicks dilemma has become toxic in and around the team. A .230 career batter, Hicks has not met even that mild standard since 2019.
From 2020 through 2022, he has hit .225, .194 and .216 and hasn't heard much other than constant booing since 2018. In what stands as a career season for the 33-year-old, Hicks hit .248 with 27 home runs. He has hit just 30 homers combined in the four seasons since.
The really bad news for the Yankees is, Hicks is signed through 2025.
