New York Yankees fans react to Gleyber Torres’ frustration at team not extending his contract yet: "Gleyber deserves better", "I hope we can keep him"
New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres is apparently done with social media. A member of the big-league club since 2018, the 26-year-old is sick of seeing his name come up in trade speculations while the team has been reticent to engage in contract extension talks.
Torres enters 2023 with a $9.95 million deal for this season, and will not be a free agent until 2025. Initially a top prospect for the Chicago Cubs, Torres came to the Yankees in a 2016 deadline deal that sent relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman to Wrigley Field to help the Cubs win that season's World Series.
While he understands that baseball is "a business," Torres hopes to remain with the Yankees at least until the end of his current contract, but wishes the team would come calling about extending his contract as New York media and fans speculate about him being trade bait.
Gleyber Torres came on like a house afire in his first major league season, placing third in the American League Rookie of the Year voting after hitting .271 with 23 home runs and 77 RBIs. He made the All-Star Game in that 2016 season, as well as the 2017 campaign, when he improved to a .278 average, 38 homers and 90 RBIs.
Since then, he has cooled off offensively. He hit just .243 in the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season, then hit .259 with 22 homers and 51 RBIs in 2021. Last season, he logged a .257 batting average with 24 homers and 76 RBIs.
New York Yankees fans ride the fence about Torres. Some love him, others loathe him. While he may not be the superstar many hoped for early on, some fans argue that he remains a valuable second baseman.
However, many fans see the Yankees' infield logjam with veterans like Torres, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and even DJ LeMahieu possibly blocking the path of prospects Oswald Peraza and Anthony Volpe. Send Torres on his way for some more pitching and do it soon, these fans think.
Other fans, while they like Gleyber Torres, think that he still has to earn the extension from the New York Yankees. Many of these people hope he does exactly that.
Even others have their own theories about Torres and the Yankees' fan culture.

New York Yankees fans have never had a shortage of opinions. So, what is yours? Do you want to see Gleyber Torres remain in pinstripes, or do you want him shipped out of town to clear the way for the next generation?
